After the flames: how FR workwear performs in an emergency
In many work environments, high temperatures and flames pose as a risk to workers. Likewise, flammable materials, chemicals and gases can also be hazardous. However, with the correct heat and flame resistant clothing, the wearer can be spared serious injury or even death.
Nomex®-based protective clothing is used within many industries including electrical, fuel- or chemical-related fields. It’s also relied upon by Formula One racing drivers and their crews as well as fighter pilots and other military personnel. There couldn’t be a better endorsement of trust in the brand than the fact that many firefighters worldwide rely on protective clothing with Nomex® on a daily basis.
What is the difference between flame retardant and flame resistant?
The biggest difference between flame retardant and flame resistant fabrics lies in how each is made.
Flame Retardant
Flame retardant fabrics are not flame-resistant or flame-proof but they are designed to slow down the spread of fire. They might also be self-extinguishing. Such fabrics can be made from any material but they must have a special chemical application to qualify as flame retardant.
When exposed to heat or flame, the chemical application will expel gases to help to suppress and slow the spread of the fire.
Flame Resistant
Fabrics made with Nomex® aramid fibers are inherently flame resistant. These fabrics will not melt, drip or support combustion in the air.
When exposed to extreme heat, Nomex® changes its properties – the fiber will thicken, giving the exposed workers valuable extra seconds of protection from heat transfer. This reaction of Nomex® increases the protective barrier between the heat source and the skin when workers need it most. What's more, this tough barrier stays supple and flexible until it cools, providing extra protection without impairing mobility.
